Google Just Pushed Links Higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews: What Small Businesses Should Do Right Now

Google dropped a set of updates on 15 October 2026 that change how links appear inside AI Mode and AI Overviews. Inline links (the ones embedded in the words of the AI answer) will show higher up more often. There’s also a test for a top section that highlights one or two official pages, expanded news carousels that surface Preferred Sources, thumbnail-style “Dive Deeper” links, and clickable creator names on some video results.

For small and medium businesses this is not just another Google tweak. AI answers already sit above or replace traditional results for many queries. When the links inside those answers move higher and become more visible, the chance of a click increases for the sites that get cited. The sites that don’t get cited stay invisible.

What Exactly Changed

Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google, outlined five updates in a blog post:

1. Inline links higher and more frequent. Google has already increased the number of inline links. Now they appear higher in the response more often so key sources are clickable earlier.

2. Official pages section (testing). For queries where only one or two sites can complete a task or provide exact information, Google is testing a dedicated block at the top of the answer with short context explaining why each link is useful.

3. News and Preferred Sources carousels expanding. Timely article carousels that also highlight a user’s Preferred Sources are rolling out to more countries and languages. Usage of Preferred Sources has grown 7x this year.

4. More visual “Dive Deeper” links. Links at the end of some AI responses now include image thumbnails and a more clickable design.

5. Clickable creator and publisher names (testing). On some AI Mode video results, names link to Google Search profiles.

Google’s stated goal is to make it easier for people to explore the open web from AI answers. Whether this produces meaningful click growth remains to be seen—Google still does not break out click data for AI features in Search Console—but the direction is clear: cited pages get better placement inside the AI response.

Why This Matters for Local and SMB SEO

In markets like India, Australia, the UK, the USA and the UAE, many small business searches (home services, clinics, real estate, restaurants, professional services) now trigger AI Overviews or can be continued in AI Mode. When a user asks “best plumber near me for emergency leak” or “how to choose a property lawyer in Dubai,” the AI answer often summarises options and cites sources.

If your page is cited, the higher placement of the inline link gives users a clearer path to your site. If you are not cited, you are competing only in the traditional results that sit below or beside the AI block. Preferred Sources further amplify this: once a user adds your site, your content is more likely to appear in carousels and be labelled in AI results.

The practical implication is straightforward. Citation in AI answers is becoming a visibility channel in its own right, not just a side effect of ranking in the blue links.

Practical Steps to Improve Your Chances of Being Cited and Clicked

Google has repeatedly said that good SEO remains the foundation for its AI features. There is no special llms.txt file or AI-only schema required. Focus on the basics that make content easy to extract, verify and link to.

Create clear, self-contained answer blocks. Open important sections with a direct answer in 40–60 words, then expand. AI systems favour concise, factual passages that can be lifted and attributed.

Use specific, original information. Local case details, pricing ranges with context, process steps, or first-hand observations perform better than generic advice. Mention concrete locations, service areas or regulatory points relevant to your market.

Strengthen entity signals. Consistent NAP (name, address, phone), a well-optimised Google Business Profile, and clear About/Contact pages help Google confirm you are a legitimate source for local queries.

Encourage Preferred Sources. Add a simple “Add us as a Preferred Source on Google” prompt or button on high-value pages. The feature has grown significantly; early adopters gain an edge in carousels.

Monitor AI visibility. Check Search Console’s generative AI reports (where available) and manually test key queries in AI Mode. Note which pages get cited and which competitors appear.

Keep traditional rankings healthy. AI answers still draw from the indexed web. Pages that rank well and have strong relevance signals are more likely to be selected as sources.

Watch the Discussion

Barry Schwartz covered these link updates (along with related search news) in his recent recap. The segment starts around the three-minute mark:

These changes do not rewrite the rules of SEO overnight, but they do raise the value of being the source that AI systems choose to link. Small businesses that focus on clear, verifiable, locally relevant content and solid technical basics will be better positioned as AI answers continue to occupy more of the screen.
