Why Technical SEO Still Wins for AI Search Visibility

Small and medium businesses keep hearing that AI search changes everything. Google’s John Mueller just confirmed the opposite in a recent interview: solid technical SEO is still the foundation that gets you into both classic results and AI answers. At Wevlopers we see this every week with clients in India, Australia, the UK, USA and UAE. Shortcuts look tempting until rankings and citations disappear overnight.

The noise around AEO and GEO is loud. Many agencies sell special markdown files, AI-only rewrites or new schema as the magic ticket. Mueller was clear: AI systems build on SEO. Technical SEO stays highly relevant because those systems still need to crawl, index and understand your pages. Wevlopers has watched sites with clean technical foundations keep or gain visibility while others chasing pure AI tricks lose ground after the September 2026 spam update finished.

What Mueller Actually Said

In the interview with David Iwanow at Search Central Live Deep Dive Europe, Mueller explained that short-term tactics always expire. People find something that works (listicles, mass AI content), everyone copies it, quality drops, and the systems eventually discount it. He compared mass-produced AI content to old tricks like keyword stuffing.

On the AI side he said: “A lot of the AI systems, they build on SEO… especially technical SEO is going to remain very relevant. It’ll be a little bit different because AI systems crawl slightly differently… But that’s just another flavour of technical SEO.”

Google’s own documentation backs this up. To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements, no special AI files and no dedicated schema just for generative features.

Practical Technical Checks That Still Matter

Here is the short list we run for every Wevlopers client before talking about AI visibility:

  • Crawlability: Check robots.txt and any CDN or firewall rules. Allow Googlebot and the main search bots. Do not accidentally block pages you want cited.
  • Indexation: Use Search Console URL Inspection on key service and location pages. Fix “Crawled – currently not indexed” issues on important URLs.
  • Canonicals and redirects: Clean self-referencing canonicals. Avoid long redirect chains that confuse crawlers.
  • Core Web Vitals and mobile: Fast, stable pages still help users and crawlers. Poor mobile experience quietly kills both organic and AI chances.
  • Structured data consistency: Markup must match visible text. Google has said this repeatedly. Fake or mismatched schema gets ignored.
  • Search Console Generative AI report: Check impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It shows which pages are already being used.

These are not new. They are the same checks that protected rankings through the March and May 2026 core updates and the long September spam update.

How This Connects to AI Overviews and Brand Searches

AI Overviews now appear on a large share of brand searches. Recently Google moved many of those brand AI Overviews into the right-hand column on desktop, where the knowledge panel used to sit. Your site can still rank at the top of the main results, but the AI summary often pulls from pages you do not control.

That makes clean technical foundations even more important. If your About page, service pages and Google Business Profile are easy to crawl and consistent, the systems have better source material. If they are blocked, slow or full of conflicting information, the AI will use someone else’s pages.

What to Do This Week

1. Open Search Console and review the Generative AI performance report for the last 28 days.

2. Run a crawl of your top 20 money pages and fix any indexation or canonical issues.

3. Confirm robots.txt is not blocking important sections.

4. Check your Google Business Profile for accuracy and recent real photos (not stock or AI-generated ones).

5. Update one high-value page with clear, direct answers plus supporting numbers or examples so it is easy to extract.

None of this requires new tools or special AI content. It requires the same disciplined technical work that has always separated durable rankings from temporary spikes.
