Update Your YouTube Descriptions to Win More Google AI Overviews Citations

Many small businesses post videos on YouTube but leave the descriptions almost empty. At Wevlopers we regularly audit channels for clients in India, the UAE, the UK, Australia and the USA and see the same pattern. Thin descriptions mean AI systems like Google AI Overviews and AI Mode have less text to pull from when deciding what to cite. A fresh experiment from Peec AI shows that simply updating those descriptions can produce large jumps in AI retrievals.

Wevlopers has been tracking AI search changes closely. The numbers matter because YouTube already ranks among the top sources cited in Google’s AI answers. Improving the text around your videos is one of the faster ways to increase visibility without re-filming anything.

What the Peec AI Study Found

Researchers at Peec AI updated descriptions on about 60 videos and added manual timestamps to 15 of them on 19 October. They compared AI retrievals before and after. Videos with updated descriptions saw a 359 percent increase in daily AI retrievals. Unchanged videos rose only 17 percent. In Google AI Overviews the lift was 293 percent versus 27 percent overall. In AI Mode it was 129 percent versus 11 percent. The study could not fully isolate the description changes from other factors, but the difference is large enough that it is worth testing on your own channel.

Why Descriptions Matter for AI Citation

AI systems do not watch the video the way a human does. They read the title, the description, the transcript and any chapter markers. A longer, well-structured description gives them clear passages they can extract and attribute. YouTube allows up to 5,000 characters. Most videos use far less. Filling that space with useful detail, timestamps and natural keywords increases the chance your video appears as a supporting link in an AI Overview or AI Mode answer.

Practical Steps to Update Your Descriptions

1. Start with the question the video answers. Put the main topic and the specific problem you solve in the first two lines. AI systems often pull from the opening text.

2. Add manual timestamps. List key sections with times (00:00, 02:15, etc.). Google already uses chapters as key moments. Fifty percent of YouTube citations in AI Overviews include a timestamp according to BrightEdge data.

3. Include relevant details and keywords naturally. Mention the service, location if it is local, the outcome, and related questions people ask. Avoid stuffing.

4. Link to your website or a relevant page. Give viewers and AI systems a clear next step.

5. Review and refresh older videos. Start with your highest-traffic or most important videos. Update 5–10 this week and monitor Search Console or AI visibility tools if you have them.

Combine with Strong Technical Basics

Google’s John Mueller has repeatedly said that technical SEO remains key for AI visibility. Make sure your videos are public, the channel is verified if possible, and your website is crawlable and indexed. A solid foundation on your site supports the citations your videos can earn. Wevlopers often pairs video optimization with on-site technical fixes so the whole presence works together.

Updating YouTube descriptions is a low-effort, high-potential step for any business that already creates video. At Wevlopers we help small and medium businesses turn these kinds of practical changes into measurable gains in both traditional search and AI answers.
