Searchers now ask full questions in Google and in tools like ChatGPT. AI systems answer many of them without sending people to a website. When they do cite a page, a fresh study shows a clear pattern: the pages that get cited more often put the answer in the opening lines.
At Wevlopers we work with small and medium businesses that cannot afford to chase every new ranking signal. The practical takeaway from recent data is simple. Make the answer easy for both people and AI systems to find. Wevlopers has seen this approach help service businesses in India, Australia, the UK and the USA get mentioned more often without adding pages of filler.

In late October 2026 TJ Digital analysed 193,507 answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. The questions came from real buying intent across 78 client companies. Blind raters looked at pages without knowing which ones had been cited. Cited pages opened with a direct answer 23 percent of the time versus 14 percent for pages that appeared in the same answer but were not cited. Against Google top-10 pages that AI never retrieved, the gap was 20 percent versus 5 percent.
What else the data showed
The same analysis found other useful associations. Pages with a year in the title had more than twice the odds of being cited. Content published or updated in the past 12 months had 88 percent higher odds. Tables raised odds by 69 percent and first-hand experience by 45 percent. These are correlations, not guarantees, but they match what we see when reviewing client pages that suddenly appear in AI answers.
Citation lists also change quickly. Studies from Ahrefs and others show that roughly half the sources in an AI Overview can turn over between checks, and the median half-life of an AI citation sits around 11 days in some datasets. That means one-time optimisation is not enough. You need pages that stay clear and current.
How to put the answer first on your pages
Start with the pages that already rank or that answer common customer questions. Open the page and read the first 100–150 words. If a visitor still does not know the direct answer, rewrite that section.
Step-by-step approach Wevlopers uses with clients:
- Identify the main question the page should answer (for example, “How much does a new air conditioner cost in Melbourne?”).
- Write a 40–80 word direct answer at the top. Include a number, range or clear statement where possible.
- Add a short sentence that says who wrote the page or when it was last checked. First-hand experience helps.
- Use a heading that matches the question, then expand with details, tables or lists.
- Add or update a visible date and consider including the year in the title if it makes sense for the topic.
- Keep the rest of the page useful so people who click through stay longer.
Example for a local plumber: “A standard blocked drain call-out in Sydney starts at $150–$250 during business hours. After-hours rates are usually 1.5 times higher. We include the camera inspection in that range when the blockage is under 10 metres from the access point.”
That paragraph alone gives an AI system something clear to quote. The rest of the page can explain common causes, prevention tips and how to book.
Quick checklist before you publish or update
- Does the first paragraph answer the main question in plain language?
- Is there a specific fact, number or range near the top?
- Does the page show a recent date or “last updated” line?
- Have you used a table or clear list for comparisons or steps?
- Does the content include something only you would know from doing the work?
- Is the page still easy to read for a human visitor?
You do not need special AI files or extra schema just for this. Google has stated there are no additional requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. The structure that helps people also helps the systems that summarise pages.

What this does not replace
Putting the answer first will not overcome thin content or technical problems that stop Google from crawling the page. It also does not replace reviews, local citations or a complete Google Business Profile for map pack results. For most small businesses the biggest gains still come from clear service pages, accurate business information and consistent updates.
Rank tracking tools have also been unreliable in recent weeks because Google sometimes serves different results to automated scrapers. Always cross-check important pages in Search Console before you decide a ranking drop is real.
